Duck Damage

Duck Damage

After an extraordinarily wet winter during which we naively let the ducks roam free, we are attempting to restore the grass. We discovered that ducks will utterly destroy any grass area by a combination of eating, waddling and digging with their bills. In no time at all much of the grass had become mud.

We did manage to keep them to the bottom half of the garden once it became apparent how much damage they were doing. You can see from the photo the difference between the inside of the duck enclosure and the outside.

My merry band of helpers

My merry band of helpers

So this week I have been reseeding. I soon discovered I had a large band of “helpers” who as fast as I lay the seed, ate the seed and dug up the ground. In the end I have had to lay chicken wire over the patches to stop them scratching it up. Most of the seeds are buried so hopefully will grow. We shall see how successful this effort will be!
